Six eyes, six hands

(Response to ‘Surgery on Afghan Boy’ by Karen Bailey)
For Tim Lund

we do not see
all six eyes and hands,
fixed
on the four-year-old
carrier of shrapnel and panic
or the open gash
that clenches your attention

but we’re there
caught in the dance
of heartbeats, in harmony
with six eyes, six hands …
the wound that is this land
not so expertly
stitched together
